What spacing should I use for stud wall studs?

For most stud walls, 400mm centres (the distance between the centre of each stud) is recommended. This provides good structural support and aligns with standard plasterboard widths. Use 600mm centres only for non-load bearing walls with lighter loads or where cost savings are a priority.

What size timber should I use for a stud wall?

CLS timber 100x50mm (4x2 inches) is the standard choice for most stud walls, providing good strength and space for insulation and services. Use 75x50mm (3x2 inches) for thinner partitions where space is limited, though this reduces insulation capacity.

What are noggins and do I need them?

Noggins are horizontal timber pieces fitted between vertical studs to provide rigidity and prevent twisting. They also provide fixing points for heavy items like TVs or shelving. At least one row at mid-height is recommended for walls over 2.4m tall. Add extra rows if you plan to mount heavy objects.

Which type of plasterboard should I use?

Standard plasterboard (tapered edge) is suitable for most internal walls. Use fire-resistant plasterboard for walls near kitchens, boilers, or between garages and living spaces. How many screws do I need per plasterboard sheet?
